Twenty two years from the first ever vintage in Marlborough Hans is still relentless in his passion for wine. Cultivating an iconic homage to a Pomerol has accumulated loyal fans worldwide. When you think of Hans' Spirit of Marlborough you are transported to the sandy, gravelly soils of the Wairau Plains which is reminiscent of the terroir and climate in the prestigious Pomerol, Bordeaux. The moderated climate and presence of the majestic Wairau River allows our Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon to ripen admirably. From vine to winery this bounty spends almost three years in French Barriques perfecting its sweet tannin structure, opulent texture and fine tuning the concentrated fruit flavours.

“Deep garnet with soft crimson rim. Lovely aroma of a mature Bordeaux blend – still has plum and cassis black fruit but also cedar, cigar box, spice and notable but not green herbaceous freshness. Bell-pepper lift and even a touch of smokiness. Deliciously mature, scented and complex. On the palate, still great fruit depth, rounded, shapely tannins. Beautifully balanced, elegant and long. Fine wine with remarkable presence and length.”

With only 200 bottles left of this vintage, we wanted to highlight the opportunity to add this to your cellar before we move vintages. This wonderful blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon (33% of each) has taken the wine world by storm, and how could it not, with 22 years since its first release it has captured the hearts of wine enthusiasts around the world. One of our most famous wines from the Estate, with very few producers being able to successfully plant and ripen these varieties in Marlborough. Hans has become the exception. Curating not only this but 20+ other varietals. All thanks to our microclimate here in the heart of the Wairau Valley. The warmest plot in Marlborough.

Hans has always put an allocation of each vintage into his library, like a time capsule. From time to time he takes these out from their vertical slumber to see how they have developed, each time showing more complex nuances and impressions. Available only through our Gourmet Restaurant does Hans share these rare nectars.
